Even with it being the height of summer, some of us are yearning for the winter! It’ll come, and it’ll come round faster than we all think. These are some recommendations from our instructors on how to prepare for your ski trip this winter.

Tune up your turns

What better way to get better at skiing than skiing more? Fortunately we have two great machines under one roof to help with that!

Practice, Practice, Practice.

The best way to get better at anything is consistency. We provide the slope, equipment and instructors. All you have to do is show up!

Are you getting ready for your first ski trip? Maybe you want to fine-tune your technique to do some harder runs in resort? Or what about improving fitness?

Balance practice can happen all the time. Brushing your teeth in the morning? Do it on one foot and get a couple of one legged squats going while you’re doing it. Not hard enough? Get yourself a wobble board or something similar to really give yourself a challenge!

At South Wilts Ski Club we can cater to all requests! Have a go on or Skytech Machine to improve your parallel edging while training every muscle you use for skiing. Alternatively, our Maxxtracks slope will really help push your skiing level by helping you train on steeper terrain, All while our expert instructors watch every turn no more than 3 meters away and help analyze your turns to get you progressing!

We also use CARV as a way to help your learning and if you haven’t used it already, it’s a great opportunity to give it a go before you commit to your own. Unsure about what CARV is? Check them out here. Sign up to their waiting list now to get them for the lowest price in October!

Now
Stretches

If you’re looking to ski or snowboard stronger, smoother, and with less chance of injury this winter, building mobility now will seriously pay off. The better your flexibility and range of motion, the easier it is to stay in control on the hill — especially when you’re crouched low, twisting through turns, or absorbing bumps at speed.

What should I be stretching and why?

Hips
Helps improve stance and control, especially if day-to-day you find yourself sitting a lot

Glutes
Especially helpful for the boarders, but also incredibly useful for skiers. These strong muscles help stability, turns and general balance

Hamstrings
Tight hamstrings limit how easily you can bend at the hips — something you’ll be doing constantly whether you’re holding a carving stance, landing a jump, or just trying to stay balanced on varied terrain.

Calves
Your calves do a lot more than you think — they help you stay centered over your skis or board, absorb impact, and control your edges. Stretching them helps prevent cramping and keeps your ankles mobile for better overall control.

Spinal Twists
Spinal twist stretches help keep your spine mobile and help reduce stiffness in your back, especially after long sessions.

Refocus your muscle memory & mindset

Been a while? Your body forgets quicker than you think.

Now is a great time to utilize our discounted summer pricing! We can tailor all sessions to you

  • Rebuild that edge control and balance
  • Build confidence on steeper terrain or at more speed
  • Remind your legs what carving feels like
  • Fix any old habits before they hit the snow

Even just a couple of sessions can reawaken those snow feelings.

Mindset > Perfection

After a long break, it’s normal to feel rusty — or even frustrated. That first run might feel awkward. The turns might not link. Your legs might scream.

But here’s the thing: that’s all part of the fun of it.

Instead of chasing perfection, chase presence. Laugh at the wobbles. Enjoy the progress. Focus on what your body can do, not what it used to.

You don’t need to be your best on day one — you just need to show up. The muscle memory will come.

Check Your Gear

Now is the best time to check your gear so that if you do need to change anything you can take advantage of the summer sales you can often find on winter gear before they start putting out new seasons’ colours.

A few things we would recommend checking are

Boots

Do they still fit you? Your feet can change a lot over 6 months. Now’s a great time to get your ski boots on, walk around a bit, make a cuppa wearing them, prep dinner. Something that doesn’t involve walking far or upstairs. Just don’t put them on, sit in front of the TV and say “Done!”

Skiers, did you do your buckles done up after your last trip? You should check you have done this, and to check that none of your buckles are wobbly. A boot fitter can look at these if so or you might need to start looking into getting a new pair.

If you have the BOA system on yours, check that they buckle up and hold on too. Nothing worse than getting up the ski lift to find your boots aren’t holding on tight. BOA offer free repair kits with their guarantees. The repair process is pretty simple and you can find out more here

Ski Socks

Check if your ski socks are now Sunday socks and very holy!

If you need to get new ski socks, the summer is the best time for sales! (Noticing a theme here to save some money?) we will post up a proper buying guide on socks a little closer to winter as socks are one of the most important bits of kit you can get in our opinion.

Just remember, kids grow, you might have stretched the sock already and now it’s too big, moths can get everywhere and really like some ski socks. It’s best to check now instead of finding out on the day/week before you go to the slopes!

Goggles

Goggles can get scratched in storage if not put away for the summer carefully. Now you should get them out and check the condition of your lenses. If there’s a scratch on them, not ideal but put them on and see if it is obstructing your view or not! Seeing where you’re going is very important! If your goggles have the ability to swap lenses out, that’s a much more cost effective way to refresh them without spending on new frames.

If you’re getting closer to the ski holiday and are able to predict the weather, check if your lenses have the suitable tint for the conditions. This is really important and can help make your trip even better. Goggles and particularly the lenses are, to me, a great investment. They can be a little pricy, but reducing eye fatigue and being able to see all of the contours in the snow is very valuable!
